Dear Grace Pacific Administration,
Grace Pacific has been good to our family. My dad has been employed for 26 yard and Grace Pacific has provided work for him every day. Even during slow periods, work was still available.
However, the job can be dangerous and life threatening. In the asphalt department, heavy machinery, heat, enclosed spaces, and working in high areas are involved. When the plant needs to be repaired my dad takes part in cutting with torches, running machinery, and heavy lifting, which causes him to come home with many burn marks all over his body. The only procedure they have to follow is the PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) which includes safety glasses, gloves, ear plugs, and a hardhat. Even though he wears all the protective equipment, the iron slag burns right through and the same for his co-workers. Most of the employees can't afford to buy quality protective equipment, so I feel they should provide employees with hot oil gloves, welding leather jackets and gloves, and NOMEX brand clothing (coveralls that don't catch on fire). Without this equipment, employees will get injured quickly and will have to continue working in pain due to the burns. Many companies that work with intense heat use NOMEX coveralls and extra protective equipment, like Hawaii Electric and chevron Hawaii. I think it's not unreasonable for your company to provide protective gear.
In addition, they have water totes (containers) that hold up to 300 gallons but the water is stale, foul smelling, and stagnant. There's no clean water on site, but only burn gel in first aid kits and aloe plants growing on the premises if a burn ever did occur. I understand that they can't have fresh running water due to the fact that they work with different types of oils, such as hydraulic oil, diesel fuel, and asphalt that can contaminate the ground, but maybe there could be a kind of oasis with a supply of freshwater close by so that if a burn does occur, workers could cool off their skin. Through this all, Grace Pacific has provided my family for 26 years and we are truly grateful.
Although, I respect your policies of providing safety equipment for employees but feel that you should do a better job of providing better quality clothing and fresh water for aid.

Final Draft: Risky Business
Teens' lives have revolved around their phones, mostly smart phones. Social media such as Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and YouTube have always been teen's favorite apps to have on their smart phones. Also texting has overpowered taking over the phone in this 21st century. Social media and texting is a major distraction in many teens' lives and also has many consequences such as lack of sleep, health issues, and interrupt face-to-face interactions. Even though teens can learn responsibility from having a cell phone, specifically a smart phone, there's a more negative influence that affects teens' in their health and social skills.
Texting can lead to lack of sleep, or tired teens. According to Dr. Gaby Badre, "...addiction to phones is becoming common and youngsters feel under pressure to be interconnected and reachable 24 hours a day." Most times when teens text their friends about something their going through (good or bad), you're going to want to know what's going on; that's why teens feel that they need to be interconnected and reachable all the time... especially at night, that's the time when everyone likes to talk about their problems. Also, teens are always searching for the latest trends and celebrity gossip by going on their phones, and checking out twitter and instagram for the latest news on "pop culture" (modern popular culture transmitted via mass media and aimed particularly at younger people). Dr. Badre suggests to "Restrict phone use and institute cell-phone free slots during the day, adolescents need to have 9 hours of sleep each night." Without 9 hours of sleep, teens won't be able to stay awake in school or be energized for any activities they attend during the day. Although, with those cell-phone free slots during the day and enough sleep, teens could be doing activities with friends or just taking a nice stroll in the park. Sounds more fun than sitting on a couch and staring at a bright screen all day.
Cell phones can harm teens health. According to www.dnaindia.com, "The excessive use of cell phones can lead to an increased risk of cancer, brain tumors and many other health hazards. More so in cases of teenagers/children." Cell phones aren't only affecting teens' sleeping hours, but it's also putting their user's lives in danger. www.dnaindia.com also states, "A 400% increase in the risk of brain cancer among teens using cell phones. Teenagers/children are more vulnerable to cell phone radiation. The younger the child, the deeper the penetration of electromagnetic radiation, as the children's skulls are thinner." Most teens should know the consequences of staying on your phone for a long period of time, it could cause severe damage to your body, especially for the younger ones. We can prevent these health problems by limiting our time on our cell phones each day.
Cell phones and texting are destroying how people talk face-to-face, relationships, and overall social skills. According to wlhsamplifier.com, "Teens are becoming more uncomfortable with any active and live social actions or confrontation of any kind, and are turning to their cell phones to do the work for them." Without any social skills, teens won't feel comfortable in the future when they have to take interviews for jobs or make presentations in college. wlhsamplifier.com also states that "Texting and social media are becoming the new phone and face-to-face confrontation. As teenagers continue to text their way to the top, innate social skills, grammar and spelling are threatened by fast moving thumbs and not enough characters." In a world behind a screen, teens are missing what's going on around them.
Put down the phone! Mute it, lock it away, or turn it off. Cell phones can cause a lack of sleep, harms teens' health, and are minimizing face-to-face interactions. By not having the proper amount of sleep, 8-9 hours a night, you won't have enough energy for school the next day. You won't be able to focus without the right amount of sleep. Also by spending way too much screen time on your cell phone, you will have a greater chance of getting cancer, brain tumors, and many other heath issues. Texting is pretty much a lazy way of talking to your family and friends. Texting shows no emotion nor feeling. You could be telling your whole life's story and your "friend" could just be answering "oh i see" without even understanding your situation. There's many pros and cons to texting but when in doubt, talk it out. When you leave your phone behind and have an actual conversation with someone, you might just find yourself learning something new and saving your own life.

College Essay: Final Draft
The UO is interested in learning more about you. Write an essay that shares information that we cannot find elsewhere on your application. Any topic you choose is welcome. Some ideas you might consider include your future ambitions and goals, a special talent or unusual interest that sets you apart from your peers, or a significant experience that influenced your life. (University of Oregon)
Free of artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, or additives, The Good Lord has saved me from this toxic and complicated world by showing me the significant aspects of life. Such as the "Spirit of Aloha", Respect, and Obedience.
Aloha, in the Hawaiian language means affection, peace, compassion, and mercy. It's the "Spirit of Aloha" that the people of Hawaii have developed and live by each day. I was stricken with a condition known as lymphangioma. Lymphangioma are malformations that are soft, slow-growing masses that form mostly on the head or neck. Although, in my case, I had the mass on my organs; which is way more severe than many. Fortunately, doctors at our local hospital were able to treat me so that I can live to share my “Special" gift to the world. This gift is known as the “Spirit of Aloha”. Aloha is being a part of all, and all being a part of me. When there is pain, it is my pain. When there is joy, it is also mine.
Respect, according to merriam-webster.com, is a feeling or understanding that someone or something is important, serious, etc., and should be treated in an appropriate way. Others abuse respect by giving threats and taunting people to do whatever they say. I've always had a strong love for people with special needs. One day when I volunteered for a community service project, I saw a little girl with down syndrome and she was watching a street musician, who was also homeless. She started doing little skips that turned into leaps of joy. As others passed by, they would notice the girl and how happy she was enjoying the sound of music, and would give the street musician money. No matter how young you are and you have some sort of disability, it doesn't matter, you can make a change in someone's life. After his performance, the man had probably made a good $500 and he split that money with the little girl saying with a smile, "Thank you little miss, go get yourself a treat". That's respect.
As I started getting involved more with my religion, Christianity, I've learned that the Lord is my Savior and we are on this earth to spread the word of The Lord. Everything I do is a reflection of Him. Just a simple smile to an elderly person or picking up litter in the park on your way back from a workout is a reflection of The Lord. I will obey His commands.

1. After two long years of being deployed in Afghanistan, I finally get to go home. Running out of the airport, I spot my family waiting with colorful balloons and a banner that read, "Welcome Home Daddy!". Josie, Sophia, and Cathy were screaming excitedly at the top of their lungs. Embracing my children after two years is the most incomparable feeling. "Don't worry girls, Daddy's home and he's here to stay".
2. Trina! Calm down, Cameron's not here yet, so put the gun down this instant. David's in the basement playing with action figurines. He'll be safe as long as you have the supplies to keep us alive. (*hears knocks on the door) Hurry and hide in the basement, it's the only way you and David can escape. Let's see what this crook wants now.
3. 24-25, USA leading and just one more point to win a Gold medal! As the official beckons to serve, Misty hits the ball to the far corner, landing on the line! The crowd goes wild with cheers and commotion. Misty and Kerri celebrate plummeting to the sky revealing their lower body strength. The two olympian volleyball players, proudly take their stance on the podium. Looking up at the American flag, the athletes get emotional, knowing that they made their country proud.

Christmas time in New York was when it was snowing in Times Square. The Swan family spent their Christmas vacation prancing in the snow. When the Swan family arrived at their hotel, they realized that Josie was freezing cold even though she had her coat on. They decided to layer more coats on Josie until she was nice and cozy. Wow, she looked like a chubby teletubbie. When the Swan family reached Times Square, Josie waddled, fell into a pile of snow and made a snow angel.
5.
Inside the old abandoned home at the end of the street, lived a fat, blonde pig named Harris. Pigs, like Harris, are illegal in the state of Buddabob. Police have been searching up and down the streets for him, until they searched the abandoned house. Harris was gigantic with his monstrous body, blonde fur and sharp teeth. Police were frightened by the description of the beast, they wouldn't imagine going face to face with Harris! As they entered the house, Rob being brave, dashed into the basement and swept Harris off his feet.

“Aloha”, in the Hawaiian language, means affection, peace, compassion, and mercy. It’s this “Spirit of Aloha” that us people form Hawaii have developed and live by each day.
Free of artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, or additives, at the age of 3, the Good Lord almost saved me from this unfortunately toxic and complicated world. I was stricken with a condition known as lymphangyonma.
I respect all that is part of the Creator, and part of me. I will not willfully harm anyone or anything; and i truly believe that the earth, sky, and sea are mine to care for, to cherish, and protect.
I have broken down my existence to who, what, where, when and why. “Aloha” has answers to these: Who- as being you and I, What- is the conscious creation of my reality, When- is now- the present moment that exists between the past and future, Where- is nature, and Why- is because we are here on Earth to cherish, protect and take care of this being we live upon.
Marcus Martiota, Bronson Yim, Deforest Buckner, Isaac Ara, and Koa Ka’ai are islanders who share this same “Spirit” and attend your University. I have a lot to share, and am wiling to expand my knowledge. It would be an honor and privilege, if you’d accept me into this fine University. I’m hoping to become a Duck with spirit.

Coming of Age: Final
I don't like their lifestyle, it's not for me. At the age of 5, I would go to the beach almost every weekend to watch dragon boat races that my parents participated in. All the aunties and uncles there would play football, catch bugs, tan, and ride waves. To be honest I didn't like the beach, football, bugs, and staying in the sun. But of course I did what they did, I wanted to fit in.
At the age of 7, all my friends in elementary school would dress up in pink, wear the newest sketcher shoes, buy the latest webkinz doll, and memorize the lyrics to all the songs from "The Cheetah Girls" and "High School Musical". I was that type of girl that always wore darker colors, use the same shoes from the year before, HATED those webkinz dolls, and I wasn't into singing at all So whenever I went to school I'd be excluded out of their conversations and they'd tease me because I never liked anything they did. The feeling of being isolated and teased by something that could be avoided, was the worst feeling in the world for me. When Christmas time came, I asked my parents if we could go shopping as my Christmas present. My parents brought me to the mall where they bought me a lot of pink clothing, the light up sketcher shoes, the snowman webkinz doll, and the CD to "The Cheetah Girls" and "High School Musical". I spent the rest of my Christmas vacation memorizing lyrics and trying to be more "girly". When I went back to school, all my friends ran over to me and started complimenting me on my new and improved look. That's when that feeling of loneliness disappeared and I felt like I belonged.
At the age of 10, I made new friends who were one year older than me. I considered them as the cool group. They wore name brand clothing, like Bilabong, Nike, ect. Except they would pick on the younger kids in the lower grades. Out at recess, our whole school would come outside to run around and get some exercise. The older kids I hung out with, would always tease and steal from the younger ones. I knew it wasn't the right thing to do so when my friends weren't looking, I would give back the things hey stole. younger kids started looking up to me and would always say hi whenever I pass by. But when I'm with the older kids, they never said a word. After that year, the older kids graduated out of elementary school and everything went smoothly after that.
At the age of 12, there was a lot of change from my past style. I started finding friends that enjoy making people laugh and smile, they just like to have a good time. They didn't care what I wore, what I did, or what i liked, they accepted me for who I am. One of my friends invited me to a volleyball clinic and I ended up loving the sport. My group of friends signed up for some volunteer work, cleaning up the campus and participating in fundraisers to help build more buildings and classrooms for our school. From that time on, I've been realizing what I feel comfortable with and who I enjoy being around. I guess that's all about growing up, learning who you are. Before, I would always want to fit in with everyone else, even though I didn't enjoy doing what they did. Now, I realize that I am my own person, and I'm the only one that can tell me what I can and cannot do. No one will ever change that.

Mini Essay - Position Statements
The government is at fault for all the incidents that occur at our state's natural attractions. So many tourists are dying because the government doesn't provide a safer environment. The government doesn't pay the park rangers to take care of the land so tourists are safe, they don't put up warning/caution signs and there is no maintenance to support the land that is slowly decaying.
It's the government's fault that there's so many incidents happening at Hawaii's natural attractions. From the article, "County denies culpability in blowhole incident", there was a rock slide at Sacred Falls on Oahu, that killed 8 people and injured 50 others. The government doesn't pay for any park rangers to take care of the land or give visitors insight on what and what NOT to do when at the site. Visitors may think that the area is safe and nothing dangerous will happen without the guidance from park rangers. According to the article, "County denies culpability in blowhole incident", Paula Remirez and Elizabeth Brem died when they apparently walked off of a steep cliff near Opaekaa Falls on Kauai. The government doesn't put up any warning/caution signs. There should at least be some signs to notify visitors of the dangers and cautions there are at the site.
In conclusion, at natural attractions, tourists that are not used to the environment should be aware of potential dangers. If the government doesn't take care of these problems, more and more innocent people will get seriously hurt and/or possibly die.

Merchant of Venice : FINAL DRAFT
"The Merchant of Venice" by William Shakespeare is a comedy about a morose Jewish moneylender (Shylock) who's hung for revenge against a Christian merchant (Antonio) who has failed to pay a loan. Bassanio is Antonio's best friend and also the lucky guy who marries the richest and most beautiful girl in Belmont, Portia. Throughout the play Bassanio seems very desperate for money, determined to get Portia, and very defensive of his friend, Antonio, especially if he's in trouble.
Bassanio isn't the richest man out of his clique and is desperate for money. In Act 1, Scene 1, Lines 122-134 it states, "Tis not unknown to you, Antonio, how much i have disabled my estate, by something showing a more swelling port than my faint means would grant continuance; nor do I now make moan to he abridged from such a noble rate; but my cheif cRe is to come fairly off from the great debts wherein my time, something too progidal, hath left me gaged. To you Antonio, I owe the most in money and in love, and from your love I have a warranty to unbuthen all my plots and purposes how to get clear of all the debts I owe. Bassanio is basically asking for money because of all the debts he owes, he can't afford to be in more debt. Surprisingly, Antonio agrees to help him get more money for whatever the reason, as long as it's honorable. "According to Act 1, Scene 3, Line 9 it states, "... three thousand ducats for three months...". Bassanio is asking a Jew for money and doesnt know that things will get dirty from here, especially since Anotonio is a Christian. Although to recieve this money (loan) from the Jew, it sounds like Bassanio's sucking up to him! "If it please you to dine with us." (Act 1, Scene 3, Line 28). Bassanio is not at all the richest, but he'll find a way to recieve money to get what he wants.
Bassanio is in love with Portia and will do anything to receive her love. According to Act one, Scene 1, Lines 173-176 it states " O my Antonio, had I but the means to hold a rival place with one of them, I have a mind presages me such thrift, that i should questionless be fortunate". It's a good decision to use this money to go and visit Portia. Possibly win her heart as a bonus. In Act 3, Scene 2, Lines 176-186 it states, " Madaam, you have berfete me of all words, only my blood speaks to you in my veins, and there is such confusion in my powers as, after some oration fairly spoke by a beloved prince, there daoth appear among the buzzing pleased multitude, where every something, being blent together, turns to a wild nothing, save of joy, expressed and not expressed. But when this ring parts from this finger, then parts life from hence! O, then be bold to say Bassanio's dead."Bassanio is committed to Portia and will never let that ring off his finger. If so, he is dead. Bassanio's love r Portia is pure and he will make a great soul mate to please Portia.
Bassanio will do absolutely anything to help out Antonio mostly because Antonio's done so much for him. According to Act 3, Scene 2, Lines 60-64 it states, " the dearest friend to me, the kindest man, the best-conditioned and unwearied spirit in doing courtesies; and on in whom the ancient Roman honour more appears than any that draws breath in Italy". Bassanio not only asks Antonio for favors,he looks up to Antonio as a role model. Antonio is Bassanio's only true friend. In Act 4, Scene 1, Lines 279-284, it states, " Antonio, I am married to a wife which is as dear to me as life itself, my wife, and all the world, are not with me esteemed above thy life; I would loose all, ay, sacrifice them all here to this devil, to deliver you." Bassanio loves Antonio more than his wife. Bassanio although loves his wife, yet he owes most love and money to Antonio. Bassanio and Antonio are the example of true friendship.
In this play Bassanio shows what true friendship is, how to love, and what it feels like to works to receive what you want. Although Bassanio is not the richest, he sure is the most generous and kindest of all.

Merchant of Venice Pre-Reading Work: Part 2
Partner: Brianne Sumida
1.) The play opens with Antonio, the merchant, admitting that he is sad, but not knowing why. Think of times when you’ve been sad. Have you always understood exactly why, or has your sadness sometimes seemed strange to you? Explain.
- There have been times where we have been sad but we haven't understood why. This brought us to some conclusions. Say if you walked pass a cemetery, you start to feel some type of way. Someone that was close to you, may have passed away and you're still feeling pretty depressed. Say if you're just casually walking through the park, and you see a ballon flying in the sky. You then have a flashback of when you were younger and you remember your favorite balloon fly away into the distance. We believe that our non-understandable sadness comes from past experience.

2.) In Shakespeare’s time, lending money for interest was called “usury” and was generally considered immoral. How have attitudes changed since then?
- In Shakespeare's time, lending money for interest (aka usury) was considered immoral. Attitudes against "usury" have changed since then. As of today banks are saying that if you decide to borrow money, you have to pay so much more than the money you borrowed. Society these days are concerned about their money; they're greedy for more. Back then people call "usury" immoral, but today we consider it normal.

3.) Think of the recent banking crisis and the state of today’s economy. Do you think it’s all right to lend someone a large amount of money based on their word and reputation even though they may not have any concrete evidence of being able to pay you back?
- It's not proper to lend someone a large amount of money based on their word and reputation even though they may NOT have any concrete evidence of being able to pay you back. Not knowing what this person is going to do with your money and isn't sure of what his/her plan is, equals a big "no no". It's your money and you should know what you're using it on and what' s even worse is that they'll be unable to pay you back. If you're lending someone a large amount of money, be sure that they will pay you back, because if they don't pay you back, and you don't do anything about it, they will use you as their personal bank machine. In conclusion, when lending large amounts of money make sure you will get payed back.
4.) This play includes romantic love stories and also ethnic and religious conflict. How well do you expect these elements to blend?
- We think these elements would blend perfectly. Say there is a romantic love story about a couple and people say that they can't be together because one has different traditions and religion that they don't approve of. Or maybe there's these two people and one of them is unsure if he/she likes this person because of their ethnicity and religion. We don't think it's going to be a happy story but more like a depressing story.

Merchant of Venice Pre-Reading Work: Part 1
- Don’t rely on outward appearances when making judgments.
- Justice is always blind.
- A brotherly love between two friends can be just as strong as an intimate love between a man and a woman.
- You can break a promise as long as you have a good excuse
- Love is blind.
- Stereotypes are often right.
- An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth is a good motto to live by.
- I agree with this statement. You can't judge a person by their looks. They could surprise you in the end. For example, there could be this really gangster looking kid but in school he gets straight A's every quarter, made it on the all-star basketball team, and volunteers at a children's hospital every weekend.
- Justice is always blind.
- I agree with this statement. Justice is like everyone is equal and never favoring another. Although in our society we favor those who are famous and have money. For example, girls can be treated how boys are treated, girls can do anything guys do.
- A brotherly love between two friends can be just as strong as an intimate love between a man and a woman.
- I agree with this statement. We can love our friends as much as we love our spouse. Surround yourself with the people who make you happy and those you love. For example, how a husband can support his wife, a friend can support a friend.
- You can break a promise as long as you have a good excuse
- I disagree with this statement. When you make a promise, you have to keep to your word. You could hurt their feelings and possibly break your relationship with that person. For example, JC promises Kian that he would bring the ring for Kian to propose, and the next day JC forgets the ring and Kian can't propose to his girlfriend.
- Love is blind.
- I agree with this statement. You could easily fall in love with someone for their looks but if you really knew that person, they could turn out as a complete jerk. Love hast their pros and cons. For example, Ricky falls in love with Dylan for her looks but then he finds Dylan bullying her little cousin.
- Stereotypes are often right.
- I disagree with this statement. There are lots of stereotypes such as how ethnicities act and talk. For example, there are lots of stereotypes that African Americans can rap better than "whites". "Whites" can rap just as good as the African Americas.
- An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth is a good motto to live by.
- I strongly disagree with this statement. Just because you give someone something valuable or do a favor for a friend, doesn't meath you're going to receive something in return. For example, if i throw JC a huge surprise party, I don't expect a surprise party in the future.

I will take my time,

Coney Island: Final
A life is like a carnival. It's full of ups and downs and you have a certain amount of time to achieve your goals before time is up. "A Coney Island Life" by James L. Weil is a poem that compares life to a carnival. Life is like a roller coaster that keeps moving forward until it reaches a complete stop.
The poem states that " having lived a Coney Island life on a roller coaster of ups and downs". Having said that Coney Island is compared to life "roller coaster of ups and downs" is the achievements and dissapointments. The poem also states "seen my helium hopes break skyward without me". The helium hopes are like balloons. It's like watching your hopes and dreams drift away leaving you to the surface. The poem states that " now arms filled with dolls I threw so much more" It's saying that the dolls are like achievements that he has worked so harded for. Then he takes for granted thinking everything will come easily. The poem also states " I have to catch the brass - ring sun before the game is up". The brass - ring is like his goal he's trying to reach before he dies. Through the metaphors the poet compares Coney Island to life. Life is like a roller coaster that keeps moving forward until it reaches to a complete stop.
