Letter
Dear Department of Education,
We are 4 students from Moanalua High School and want to talk about longer school days.
Regarding the bill SB 2922, there are some changes we would like to propose. First off we would like you to reconsider making the school days longer. Many students are having trouble getting a healthy amount of sleep at night, longer school days meaning less time to finish homework. Even student-athletes are up late almost every night trying to finish homework and projects. Also since school days are longer, when sports have games or events during school they miss much more school. This gives the student-athletes more stress after a long day. Our suggestion is to allow schools to go back to the old schedules. Students were only required to take six classes and received homework for these six classes. Extending the school days had added another class to students schedules which also includes more homework after the even longer school days. This is causing majority of the students to start to lose many hours of sleep and come to school tired more often. If we revert back to the old schedules students will be able to complete all the work that needs to be done and come to school well rested.
Sincerly,

13-21 Reading Review
1. Katniss and Rue come up with a plan to destroy the Careers' food supply by distracting them and then ambushing their camp. While Rue is distracting the Careers', Katniss realizes that there are explosive mines where their camp is and if anything touches the area, it will trigger an explosion or a chain of explosions. Katniss risks her life to trigger the mine under the Careers' camp and destroys their food supplies and everything else they had for survival. When Katniss goes to the place where she was supposed to meet Rue, she's not there so she goes in search of Rue. She ends up finding her trapped in a net and sees the killing of Rue. It's a plus and minus for Katniss; Plus:she has more supplies and the Careers don't. Minus: Katniss' ally is dead.
Quotes:
- "I cut Rue's pack from her back as well, knowing she'd want me to have it but leave the spear in her stomach" (Page 236)
2. When Katniss finds out about the new rule, she goes to search for Peeta. She finds Peeta camouflaged in leaves and mud, but with many wounds and a fever. Their "romance" continues with Katniss searching for ways to keep Peeta alive, and takes care of him even though he can't do much because he's dying.
Quotes:
- "For two tributes to have a shot at winning, our "romance" must be so popular with the audience that condemning it would jeopardize the success of the Games." (Page 247)
- "Only I keep wishing I could think of a way to.. to show the Capitol they don't own me that I'm more than just a piece in their Games." (Page 236)
3. When Katniss tries to reach for the bag with "12" on it, she almost gets hit with a knife but as Clove throws again, it slits the skin above Katniss' eyebrow. Clove then tackles Katniss to the ground and slits the skin around Katniss' mouth. Thresh then hears Clove talking about how she killed Rue. Thresh got upset and killed Clove and didn't harm Katniss, when she told him that she tried to save Rue. Katniss leaves with the bag with "12" and inside the bag would be the medicine for Peeta's leg.
Quotes:
- "We're going to kill you, just like we did your pathetic little ally... what was her name? The one who hopped around in the trees? Rue? Well, first Rue, then you and then I think we'll just let nature take care of Lover Boy. How does that sound?" (Page 285)
- "Clove is dangling a foot off the ground, imprisoned in Thresh's arms." (Page 286)
- " Thresh brings the rock down hard against Clove's temple. It's not bleeding, but I can see the dent in her skull and I know that she's a goner." (Page 287)
- "Just this one time, I let you go. For the little girl." (Page 288)
4. Katniss' attitude is more genuine as she cares for Peeta. Peeta says, "You go and I'm going, too"(Page275) "It's sleep syrup. It's a common medicine in District 12. Cheap, a medicine goes, but very addictive."(Page 275) "I mash up a handful of berries so the taste won't be as noticeable and add one mint leaves for good measure."says Katniss. (Page 277) Peeta says, "'They're sweet as syrup... syrup.' His eyes widen as he realizes the truth". (Page 277) "I can see in his eyes what I'e done is unforgivable." says Katniss. (Page 277). Katniss doesn't want to risk seeing Peeta get hurt even more, or worse, die. Obviously, Katniss cares a lot for Peeta if she doesn't want him to die. "Im careful to leave Peeta with water and the medical kit right beside him." (Page 280) Just in case Peeta wakes up before Katniss gets back to the cave, he'll have some things to keep the pain from worsening. Katniss is that type of girl that's very cautious about people, especially those who are in the hunger games; and if she wanted to win, she would've killed Peeta on the spot. These acts of kindness from Katniss, proves that she does really care for Peeta and his safety.

Macbeth Final
When we sin, we are proof that evil does exist. There was and always will be evil in this world and negativity to persuade us and go against our morals. We are sometimes desperate for fortune and popularity, which isn't a characteristic for everyone but everyone wants it. Sometimes we're greedy and only care about ourselves and what we want instead of looking at the whole picture, realizing the possible consequences. If you can't get what you want, then it probably wasn't meant to be needed. In life, there's always ways to get things we want without going against our morals but since we are human, of course we're tempted to sin and be greedy. In Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Macbeth proves just that.
We are convinced to be the greatest normally because others say we are, it goes straight up to the head and that's when you start to think. "All hail, Macbeth! Hail to you, Thane of Glamis!", "All hail, Macbeth! Hail to you, Thane of Cawdor!", "All hail, Macbeth! You'll be king one day!" (1.3.31) After the three witches told Macbeth he was going to be king, Macbeth was probably curious as to when because he was too excited. Although, it must've gotten to his head because everything went downhill after the witches told him the prophecy. "If we could get away with the deed after it's done, then the quicker it were done, the better. If the murder had no consequences, and is death ensured success... If, when I strike the blow, that would be the end of it - here, right here, on this side of eternity - we'd willingly chance the life to come." (1.7.55) After all that Macbeth's been through with winning the war, you wouldn't think he would have the nerve to murder the leader of his country. Since the words the witches said, made him think about what could be, he was impatient as to when it was going to happen, he wanted it badly, and right away. Others can have a great influence in how we act and think, for the good or as for macbeth, the evil.
Others can also have a huge influence on where you take your stand. Lady Macbeth said, "Was the hope drunk that made you determined before? Has it been sleeping sine? And has it woken up to look queasily upon what it did when tipsy? From now on, I know what your love's worth. Are you afraid to match your acts with your ambitions? Can you want that glittering prize - the crown ..." (1.7.57) If the "love of your life" were to tell you this, there wouldn't be any questioning on what you should do, you'd probably do it to make them happy. Peer pressure, especially from your loved ones can become an influence on your decisions. Macbeth replies, "That's enough of that! I'll dare do anything that's worthy of a man." (1.7.57) A small shove of pressure could make anyone give in. Macbeth obviously doesn't have a mind of his own, and is confused about his morals. Even though others may influence us to do what isn't right, doesn't mean we have to follow their orders, we have our own mind that can think for itself.
Once you've done something that is unforgivable, perhaps evil, you'll eventually have an appetite for more. "I won't go back! I'm afraid to think of what I've done. I daren't look at it again!" (2.2.73) Macbeth was so afraid and worried after murdering Duncan that he became paranoid. Do it once, you do it again. Macbeth says, "I've almost forgotten the taste of fear."(5.5.191) After murdering Duncan and his best friend ,Banquo, evil has practically taken over his heart and implanted itself deep into his soul. Once a murderer always a murderer, and he can't undo what he's done. Transforming into a monster is the aftermath of all this chaos.
Macbeth started off as a hero, one that people looked up to and honored, but then ended up as a monster. As the witches stated Macbeth's prophecy, he became more and more intrigued in become king. He told his wife, and she persuaded him to kill King Duncan so that they could reign earlier than expected. All they could've done was just wait and see, if it was meant to be. If it were fate, it would've happen, it would just take some patience. Macbeth and his Lady weren't, they were greedy and selfish for all they thought about was their happiness and what they wanted instead of what their country needed. The consequences was death for both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, what comes around goes around. There were ways that Macbeth could've handled the situation without the deaths, but since he was tempted to go against his morals, he became evil.

Macbeth Soliloquy
I'm a mad man. This is not me! I've just killing my good friend King Duncan when he has done me no harm. There's no turning back now, too late for appologies and second thoughts. The deed is done and I have to move on. My lady wants it all, happy wife, happy life. Okay Macbeth, you have to be a man and follow what the witches proficise. But hey, at least I get to be King. All the fame and riches, I get EVERYTHING to myself. I'm getting high on evil, It's my drug that I cant get rid of. If I remember correctly, the witches said that Banquo's sons will be Kings but never my offspring?! They need to be killed as well and right away! Just think about what I could have if I just finish it myself. I'd rule the world!!!

LA2 (period 7)- 4/2 Handout: Part 1&2
PART I:
6. Lady Macbeth is a cold blooded murderer because she doesn't care about anything but herself and Macbeth and about what greater life they would have if she were queen and he were king. All the glory and riches all to themselves with nobody suspecting that it was them that are the murderers because of how friendly and innocent they seem.
7. Lady Macbeth pretends to faint in Act II because she needs to play off the act that she's helped murder King Duncan and to act all innocent, she pretends like she's going to pass out, so that no one would suspect that it's weird not for a "lady" to be disgusted by what has happened.
8. Macbeth's feelings have changed from the murder of King Duncan. Macbeth was very scared and worried after he killed Duncan and when the others found out Macbeth pretended to be very innocent.
9. Lady Macbeth didn't kill the king because he looked like her father in his sleep and if she did murder the king with her own hands it would be like killing her father and she would've been just as worried as Macbeth was. (page 69)
10. Now that Macbeth has murdered the king, I feel that he should move his kingdom elsewhere to make everyone wonder if someone's lurking around the kingdom killing leaders. If Macbeth wants to hide this secret he's going to have to forget like it's never happened (which is merely impossible) and continue on with his life of lies.
PART II: QUOTES
6. Lady Macbeth: Coward! Give me the daggers! Sleeping and dead people are like pictures of themselves. Only children fear a picture, even of the devil. If he's still bleeding, I'll smear the faces of the servants so it will look as if they did it. (Act 2 Scene 2 Page 73)
Lady Macbeth: My hands are the same color as yours - but I'd be ashamed to have a heart as white as yours! (Act 2 Scene 2 Page 73)
7. Macduff: Oh, gentle lady, my words are not for your ears. No woman could survive the telling. (Act 2 Scene 3 Page 81)
Lady Macbeth: Help me, please [pretending to faint] (Act 2 Scene 3 Page 85)
8. Macbeth: [Horrified] I won't go back! I'm afraid to think of what I've done. I daren't look at it again! (Act 2 Scene 2 Page 73)
Macbeth: If I had died an hour before this happened, I'd have lived a blessed life span. From now on, there's nothing left worth living for. Everything is a sham. Honor and dignity are dead. The wine of life has gone. Only the dregs remain. (Act 2 Scene 3 Page 83)
9. Lady Macbeth: ... If Duncan hadn't looked like my father in his sleep, I'd have done it myself. (Act 2 Scene 2 Page 69)
Lady Macbeth: We mustn't keep thinking about it like this; it will drive us mad. (Act 2 Scene 2 Page 71)

Macbeth Anticipation Guide - Individual Work
- Agree. Behind every great man is a great woman because without support, there’s no motivation to accomplish anything. Nothing/no one to fight for. Without my father’s mother, he would never be the man he is today; caring, passionate, and hard working.
- Agree. There was always evil in this world. There will always be negativity to bring you down and persuade you to do/think wrong. When we sin, we are proof that evil does exist.
- Disagree. There’s always a way to get the things you need, without force and wrong doing. If you can’t get what you want, then it wasn’t meant to be needed. My friend was trying to persuade his drunk uncle to buy him a pack of cigarettes at a small gas station store. He ended up getting caught by his parents. Today, he hasn’t tried drugs or alcohol, he’s realized that he doesn’t need drugs to have a great life.
- Agree. Just because someone has done something unforgivable, doesn’t mean you have to stoop down to their level. There’s nothing you’ll gain by getting revenge to the person that hurt you, kill them with kindness. A popular girl in middle school would always gossip about this nerdy boy that had a mental disorder. Everyone would make fun of him but he didn’t mind. High school came and he won prom king 2 years in a row and got a scholarship to the University of Oregon, he was very successful. The popular girl never had any friends in high school because of her big mouth and nasty attitude, everyone realized that she was very immature.
- Agree. We can all agree that we want many things such as fortune and popularity. Sometimes we can all get greedy and only care about ourselves and what we want instead of looking at the whole picture and realizing what are some possible consequences. My friend stole gum from a market to impress a girl that he liked for the longest time. She was rugged and not the brightest soul I’ve met. He was one of the kindest people i’ve ever met and he has good morals, but he really liked this girl and he would do anything for her. He got caught by one of the employee and ended up getting in trouble while the girl ran away.
- Disagree. If that person feels that the ruler is destroying the country, what does that person know. He/She wouldn’t have the facts/people to support his/her decision, that ruler could have a plan to make things even better. The class president was liked by everyone in school except for one girl who had a strong love for school. Anyways, their president was giving a speech about school. The girl took it the wrong way because she thought he was going to make school less enjoyable than it is now. She tried talking to the principle and cliques at school, they all thought she was crazy, and she was. Their class president was saying that they should create more school activities and possibly hire educational speakers to speak to every class.
- Agree. Not all murders are done because of hatred or mental illness. Sometimes it could be for self defense; to be proven with facts and evidence. A girl was on a run outside of her neighborhood. She always carried an iron rod and pepper spray just in case. Good thing she did because there was a suspicious man behind her and he rushed her to the ground unexpectedly. She began pepper spraying him and beating him with the iron rod.
- Disagree. “Success is worth any price you have to pay.” Taking this literally, success is a feeling you’ve earned and not have to pay $$$ for. There’s no easy way to succeed. Jordyn wasn’t the best at volleyball player when she was 9, but she played on a 16s team for her first year of club. Even though she didn’t play in tournaments, she always went to practice and arrived an hour earlier than everyone else. Throughout the years she improved not only every year but every week. Her senior year, she was an all star, the greatest setter/hitter/passer (all around player) i’ve ever known. She ended up receiving player of the year and received a full ride to Blinn College.
- Agree. Our goal in our life on earth is to serve God the best we can and to reflect his love to others through our actions. We are the Kings and Queens of our own lives but The Lord is The Almighty, we listen and fear Him. Pastors and Priests are like Kings of the Lord, they are the ones who keep our lives in tact and remind us that everything we do is for Him.
- Disagree. We have free will and can do whatever we want to do. A horoscope is just a prediction according to stars, but what do stars know about us? Yeah, nothing. Everyone is different. My sister was reading her favorite magazine and she turned to the horoscope page. It was very negative, saying that she was going to lose friends and regret her decision. She started her day worrying about everything and kept quiet and isolated the whole day, until her best friend talked to her, saying that it's all fake. We have the option of listening to our horoscope and worrying or decide on how your day is going to go, the way YOU like it.
- Disagree. Everyone should have a second chance. No one is perfect, and just because they betrayed you doesn't mean they're for sure going to do it again. My best friend before was my bully. Once I realized what she's been through, I've respected her for how strong she is.

- Is evil ingrained in human nature? That is, are some people just “born evil,” or is evil caused by circumstance or environment?
No, evil is not ingrained in human nature. At birth we are all born innocent and are blessed with tabula rasa or a blank mind as John Locke once said. As we grow older we become accustomed to the cruel realities of our society. We observe and witness the happening world around us as we too become victims of the evil in our environment. It becomes a habit for us to act as others do therefore we allow the evil to ruin the pureness of our childhoods and in exchange fill it with evil and hatred.
- Are our lives determined by fate, or by the acts of our free will?
Our lives are determined by our free will because if we had a “fate” we could easily change it. We don’t know how our life is going to turn out in the end, but we are the rulers of our own. Fate is the development of events beyond a person’s control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power. Unlike free will, it’s the ability to act at one’s own discretion. We write our own story, by the acts of our free will.
3. Is redemption truly possible? That is, is it possible to commit an act of genuine evil and truly recover from it?
Depending on the severity of the evil they committed, we think that redemption may or may not be possible. A person who committed an act of genuine evil may not have been in the right state of mind and was just acting reckless to cope with the hardships they were going through at the moment. On the other hand, the person could have fully understood the consequences of their actions and probably intended for evil to be done. Therefore, a person may be able to recover but it all depends on the person and if they truly feel guilty about their actions or if they feel justice has been served and stand by their wrongdoing.
4.Is it possible to admire or respect a person whom you know has committed acts of genuine evil?
It’s not possible to admire/respect someone who’s committed acts of evil, but wouldn’t we wouldn’t despise them. Everyone’s not perfect, but we decide on how we act upon situations. Although if someone has committed multiple acts of evil we wouldn’t be able to have respect or trust for that person. You do it once, you could easily do it again.
5. Do “the ends justify the means”? That is, if one uses morally evil methods to acquire a goal, is that goal forever tainted or polluted by the actions one has taken to achieve it?
No, the ends do not justify the means. Your goals can only be truly attained and justified by hard work. Any other means of reaching that goal will only set you further in your guilt and will trouble you forever. Using morally evil methods to acquire your goal will only lead to grave consequences therefore, you will never be fully content with yourself, because the burden of guilt will eat at you. The goal will forever be tainted and polluted by your actions, because what’s done is done and you can’t change the past.

Critical Stance
a. Discuss how Wiesel sets up the contrast between the panic of the Jews with each new decree or action of the government and their attempts to reassure themselves and to adjust to each new infringement on their freedom.
- Wiesel is trying to say that the Jews would do anything the Germans demanded because they believed that they wouldn't get hurt if they obeyed commands.
Dialectical Journal Entries
a. Find five direct quotations from the book that you feel is important to the story and provide each with your own commentary.
- "There are a thousand and one gates leading into the orchard of mystical truth. Every human being has his own gate. We must never make the mistake of wanting to enter the orchard by any gate but our own. To do this is dangerous for the one who entered and also for those who are already there." - Moshe the Beadle (page 3 paragraph 4)
Moshe the Beadle seems to be very religious and has strong values. This quote from Moshe discusses how we should focus on ourselves and our goals instead of being in everyone's business and interrupting their lives when their trying to focus on their own. There will be certain people that will be of big help in your lives and also those who will cause obstacles that you'll overcome; be cautious.
- "I wanted to come back to Sighet to tell you the story of my death. So that you could prepare yourselves while there was still time." - Moshe the Beadle (page 5 paragraph 5)
After Moshe came back to Sighet, he warned the Jews by telling them his story of when he was away. Moshe was a person for the people, he cared for them but they didn't care and thought he was crazy, when he was telling him the truth and wanted to help.
- "he dealt my father such a clout that he fell to the ground, crawling back to his place on all fours... My father had just been struck, before my very eyes, and I had not flickered an eyelid" (page 37)
- "I had looked on and said nothing. Yesterday I should have sunk my nails into the criminals flesh."(page 37)
The narrator has never experienced such violence towards a family member and is feeling emotions, such as hatred and violence, for another person. The narrator must've lived in a peaceful environment where nothing had ever gone wrong.
- "There was no floor. a roof and four walls. Our feet sank into the mud." (page 35)
Their camp is just like a prison but treated them like slaves

Allusion Poem Final
Floating around to places
She is needed
You can sense the desperate
Feelings of young, remarkable
Children wanting an escape
To freedom and adventure
They're practically perfect
In every way
She'll take them on a stroll in the park
Show them how to take care
A ride on enchanted carousels
And tea with penguins
It begins to rain cats and dogs
They're soaked and it's time to go home
Don't want to catch a cold
Here's a tip:
A spoonful of sugar
Helps the medicine go down
You could say it was
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
She taught them to find
Positive aspects in life
To also have fun as well
Laughter is key
With her work done
She flies away
In every job
That must be done
There is an element
Of fun.
She is needed
You can sense the desperate
Feelings of young, remarkable
Children wanting an escape
To freedom and adventure
