LA2 (period 7) - 3/31 Handout: Part 1&2

PART ONE
1. The relationship between Macbeth and his wife is that they're both very close and they're like partners in crime, literally.

2. Macbeth decides to murder Duncan because he wants to be the next king, and the witches told Macbeth that he would be the next King/Ruler.

3. Macbeth seems to be a greedy character and he seems to be two faced. Macbeth wants to be King and he's willing to invite the King (Duncan) to stay at his place and murder him.

4. Macbeth will get away with the murder because so far, he's won the war and everyone loves him. Why would anyone hate him or think that he's done something wrong, when he's done everything right.

5. Macbeth shouldn't kill Duncan because if it was fate, said by the witches, Macbeth should be the king no matter what.

PART TWO
1. Lady Macbeth: Look frank and innocent. To show your feelings is dangerous. Leave everything to me. (Act 1 Scene 5 Page 51)

Macbeth: If we could get away with the deed after it's done, then the quicker it were done, the better. If the murder had no consequences, and is death ensured success... If, when I strike the blow, that would be the end of it - here, right here, on this side of eternity - we'd willingly chance the life to come. (Act 1 Scene 7 Page 55)

2. 3rd Witch: All hail, Macbeth! You'll be king one day! (Act 1 Scene 3 Page 31)

Macbeth: I'm settled on it then. All my faculties shall be devoted to this terrible deed. Let's go and pass the time as perfect hosts. We must conceal our false hearts behind false faces. (Act 1 Scene 7 Page 61)

4. Sergeant: ... Brave Macbeth - he well deserves that name! (Act 1 Scene 2 Page 23)

Macbeth: ... He has honored me recently, and I've won great respect from all sorts of people. This is to enjoyed while it's new, not cast aside so soon. (Act 1 Scene 7 Page 57)
